If you watched the news at all last week, you saw a story about a banana duct taped to a wall that sold for $120,000 and was then EATEN by a performance artist. This all happened at Art Basel in Miami.
In a less reported, but more fabulous story, AlanaKayART was on display for the first time at Art Basel.
For those of you who hadn't heard of the Art Basel before last week, it is the premiere art show for modern and contemporary artists. And just a little more than two years after completing my first painting, my artwork was showcased right along next to some of the biggest names in the art world.
As with just about every other thing in my AlanaKayART journey, I came into Art Basel flying blind. It was definitely a bucket item list for me, but like most of those dreams, it hung in the abstract future. My Miami art rep, Maria, saw it differently. A few weeks ago Maria told me they wanted to put me in the Design+ show in conjunction with Art Basel.
In the short 2.5 weeks between that meeting and the Art Basel kick off, I produced wallpaper from my painting Counterbalance, boxed up and shipped two paintings (Red Butler and Crowded), cocktail glasses, and an acrylic tray. Not gonna lie, it was a stress-filled, blurry couple of weeks. Add this to the fact that I couldn't quite wrap my brain around what exactly Art Basel was and how my art would fit into the mix. It was a lot of unknowns, which are not my favorite.
I also agreed to head down to Miami for the VIP unveiling of Design+ which occurred Thursday morning of Art Basel.
I thought Art Basel would be kind of like a giant art fair. And certainly the artwork was for sale, but it was much more akin to large-scale museum installations taking place all across the city.
My installation was part of Design+, which took place at the Hyatt Regency Miami. I am so fortunate that my bestie, Mel, lives close by, so I got to share all the excitement with her. We immediately found some wine so we could do a celebratory toast. Weaving through the maze of hallways, I was blown away by the talent and creativity of artists from around the world. Paintings, sculptures, furniture, and fabric were everywhere! We rounded a corner and found my art pieces right in the mix.
Any of you who know me will not be surprised that I made some slight rearrangements to my display (HA!). My art was paired with an amazing credenza piece by Salvatore Baiano. I am OBSESSED with everything he does.
After a few quick adjustments, I was thrilled to stand back and take it all in. We toasted, took a million pictures, walked around more exhibits and as I stood on the terrace, my emotions came flooding in. It was a crazy mixture of disbelief, exhilaration and humility at the idea that my art would be included with all these incredible talents.
Having my name among the artists whose work has been shown at Art Basel is a huge deal, both in the art world and in my world. I've already started thinking about how I can be a part again in an even bigger way!! But for this moment, I'm going to take a breath and enjoy this dream come true.
I also want to thank all of you that have had such a huge impact on my success. To those of you who have purchased art or my retail designs, those of you who are my constant cheerleaders or my shoulders to cry on, those of you who like and share my posts, who proudly wear your AlanaKayART fashion -- THANK YOU! You fuel my passion and keep me going.
CHEERS to more huge moments on my journey and yours!!
