Date Night Two Ways

By | CMYKay

Growth – Harmony – Freshness – Fertility

Date nights are my love language. Whether you have been together ten days, ten years or are pushing toward your golden anniversary, making time for each other is a key factor in a healthy relationship. My husband and I thoroughly enjoy any chance we get to leave the house for an evening, whether that means trying out a new restaurant here in Funkytown or attending a concert in Dallas. Of course one of my favorite parts of date night is dressing up for the occasion.

Just because you’ve found the love of your life doesn’t mean your date night outfit has to be boring (I’m talking to both the men and women here). Sure, your little black dress is reliable and flattering (okay, that’s aimed towards the ladies), but instead of sticking to reliable, I want to challenge you to show off your creativity and dress how you feel. Do you feel monotone and dark when you go on a date with your significant other? I hope not! You feel joy and excitement.

Green is a perfect spring date night color because it stimulates feelings of growth, harmony, freshness and fertility. Brighter and more vibrant shades of green bring energy to the table, making it an excellent choice for those upbeat, off the beaten path date nights like taking a salsa class, mastering an escape room, or singing a duet of “I got you babe” at a karaoke bar.

So, what are you waiting for? Check out these date night looks and start planning.

DATE NIGHT

- Dinner Downtown -

Did you say drinks at Reata rooftop? Yes please. Pair my AlanaKayART Viridescent Skirt with a dainty silk camisole and some fabulous shoes. Accessorize with your favorite pair of lightweight acrylic earrings, like this brand new Bloom style from AlanaKayART, and add a piece of elegant Mustard Seed Jewelry. Finish your look with an animal print clutch to add just the right amount of the unexpected.

The movement and colors of this Viridescent skirt shout spring. Pair it with a silk camisole for a delicate and ultra-feminine look.
For this look, I chose to match my statement earrings with the same color palette (Viridescent Bloom), but a bright pink contrast would also look fantastic.
Break out your date night shoes for this look…you know those ones you bought last season but never wore because you never had the occasion? Date night is that occasion. These bright pink heels are just the right touch of unexpected.
Accessorize with dainty jewelry like these long drops from Mustard Seed Jewelry. Lastly, don’t forget to pair with a fabulous clutch. I am currently loving animal print pairings.

DATE NIGHT

- The Stockyards -

I grew up on a farm in Clifton, TX, so my boots and hat were more necessity that accessory. Now that I’m a city girl, my boots may not be my everyday wear, but the great thing about living in Texas, specifically a city nicknamed Cowtown, is that boots and cowboy hats are always in style.

For a more casual date night look, or a date night in the Fort Worth Stockyards, pair my Viridescent Skirt with a white t-shirt and some glitter or fringe boots. Add a pair of statement earrings, I’m wearing AlanaKayART Bloom earrings here, and cap it off with a fashionable Cowboy Hat…pun intended.

A pleated skirt is a great look for dinner, drinks, or dancing. It offers the perfect amount of swoosh and the one I’m wearing has pockets! Yes, pockets!
Statement earrings are an easy way to add a bold pop of color to any look. My Bloom earrings are lightweight acrylic and are all based on original AlanaKayART paintings.
Boots…non-negotiable. If you are doing date night in the Stockyards, boots are a must! For a fun twist on the traditional boots, try a pair with glitter or fringe.
Another item on the non-negotiable list for a Stockyards date night is a hat! This gorgeous felt green hat paired perfectly with my outfit, but a tan or black hat would pair just as well.

Now that the hard part is planned for you (your outfit), start planning your date night! Whether you are going out for a romantic dinner at a five-star restaurant or heading to a concert this weekend, I’ve got you covered with two outfit ideas that are sure to show off the energy and freshness you feel wearing green!

I am a believer in the power of color. I see it every day as an artist, a designer and my self-proclaimed role as color evangelist. I have seen color reconnect people to themselves and others, empower women, and inspire joy. CMYK is the abbreviation for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and blacK. Combining those four colors allows us to create any color. Bright, dark, bold, subtle, neutral, neon — all of them.

Over the past year, people continue to admire the bold colors and patterns used in AlanaKayART and tell me how great I look, but are concerned that they can’t pull off such vibrant colors.

Challenge accepted.

The goal of CMYKay is to educate you about color and empower you to incorporate it into your home and wardrobe in both big and small ways. It will challenge you creatively and encourage you to have fun with color in new and re-imagined ways, because friend, life in color is way more fun.

A Different Way to St. Paddy’s Day

By | CMYKay

Growth – Harmony – Freshness – Fertility

St. Patrick’s Day is Sunday, March 17 and you know I will be celebrating with all things GREEN! The ties between St. Patrick’s Day and the color green go way back, but did you know that the original color synonymous with St. Patrick’s day was blue? Yes, you read that right. In early paintings, St. Patrick is shown wearing the official color of the Order of St. Patrick: blue.

It wasn’t until the 20th century that the holiday became associated with the color green for religious and national reasons. Ireland’s nickname is The Emerald Isle, the green stripe in the Irish flag represents the Catholics of Ireland and of course those fabled Leprechauns ran around wearing green from head to toe.

While I love blue, I just can’t imagine celebrating this Holiday with any color other than green! This year, I am taking it to the next level and glamming up with green makeup. This look is perfect for your St. Patrick’s Day parade or even a fun date night. Read the tutorial below to recreate my look.

A DIFFERENT WAY TO ST. PADDY’S DAY

-Let Your Eyes Do The Talking-

While I believe you can wear fun makeup any time of the year, St. Patrick’s Day is the perfect excuse to try out a fun green look. Thanks to my friend Halley Hamer with House of Tesla Hair and Makeup, I was able to sport this look just in time for the Holiday AND manage to go out to dinner with my family after and get lots of stares. I just see it as the highest form of flattery. 😉

Start with no foundation! It is best to begin your canvas clean moisturized skin.
With any bright colored shadow, you’re going to want to apply Shadow Shields. They catch any fallout from your shadow application and keep your under eye area bright.
Swirl your brush in the lime green shade of your Take Me To Brazil Shadow Palette and tap off excess shadow. Then, take the brush to the outer corner of your eyelid and pat the shadow on moving it inward. Cover the entire lid and lash line with the remaining product on the brush and blend. Blending will be our best friend!

You’re going to want these shadow shields as you apply this bright look. Not only will they keep any fallout from happening, they will also keep your under eyes looking bright and fresh! This entire eye look was created with six products: Tarte Shape Tape ConcealerTake Me to Brazil Shadow Palette, J. Cat Beauty Glitter in Poppin’ LimeNYX Lime Green Eyeliner, MAC Three Rings Eyeshadow and Ardell Lashes.

Take this lime green shade up pretty high towards the brow bone. You want the colors to be seen when your eye is fully open, so be sure to check what your shadow looks like with your eyes opened looking straight forward. When you are all done, apply MAC Three Rings eyeshadow just under the brow to make your brow line pop.
Add the mid lime green shade to the corner and in the crease to add definition to the eye shape and go back and forth blending the two shades. Then, take the light lime green shade and blend the shadow up into the brow bone. To deepen the look, swirl the brush in the matte dark green shade, tap off excess, start in the outer corner of the eye and pat it into the crease, do this multiple times until you achieve the eye look you are going for.
To ensure that you can see the colors and the gradient effect open your eye, take your brush and blend shadow above the crease while the eye is opened. Finally, cut the crease Tarte Tape Shape Concealer apply to the inside of the eyelid, then use NYX glitter primer and apply your J. Cat Beauty glitter in Poppin’ Lime. Then, apply your base layer of mascara and remove your Shadow Shields.

After you have completed the shadow parts of your eye, apply your Shape Tape Concealer,  J. Cat Beauty Glitter in Poppin’ LimeNYX Lime Green Eyeliner and Ardell Lashes. Make sure you apply mascara to your natural lash before you apply your lashes.

Contour your face with Anastasia of Beverly Hills Contour Palette at the top of your hairline and just below your cheek bones as well as you jaw bone. Then, highlight with WetNWild Precious Petals anywhere the light hits (forehead, nose and chin). Add MAC Bright Pink Blush to your cheek bones and blend.
Complete your look with the perfect pink lip by using Bite Beauty Neon Fuschia lip color.
Finally, set your face with Urban Decay All Nighter to make it last all day and night long!

The rest of your look is all about contouring and highlighting. After you have finished your eyes and applied lashes, clean up and apply foundation of your choice. Then contour with your Anastasia of Beverley Hills Contour Palette and highlight with WetNWild Precious Petals. Then apply your MAC Bright pink blush and finish with the perfect pink lip by using Bite Beauty Neon Fuschia lipstick. I set my look with Urban Decay All Nighter as well to make it last.

And there it is…your St. Paddy’s Day makeup look complete! Pair it with an AlanaKayART Viridescent Skirt or leggings and believe it or not, a pair of bright pink Badass Earrings is the perfect way to complete your look.

Share your GREEN look with me this weekend by using the hashtag #CMYKay. Cheers!

Finding My Place in the Desert

By | Artist Story, Home and Interior

If you’ve followed AlanaKayART very long, you know that I love bright colors. It is entirely possible there is teal running through my veins. But I also love a challenge. I am currently finishing a project that has challenged me in all the right ways.

Last fall, I had the opportunity to complete a 17 painting installation for the Black Hawk Country Club in Houston. My artwork was a departure from the more traditional artwork they were used to, but the owners and members really felt as if my paintings made the newly renovated clubhouse come to life.

In fact, they liked my work so much that in January, Black Hawk’s ownership group commissioned me to pour 10 (very) large paintings for The Gallery Golf Club in Marana, Arizona. When I visited The Gallery, I was inspired by the peaks and canyons of the The Tortolita Mountains and the breathtaking colors of the Sonoran Desert. I couldn’t turn around without finding some new and amazing color. The only thing is, the colors in the desert were a very different pallet from the bright colors that normally speak to me.

Desert Sunset

I flew home and immediately started putting together moodboards, drawing inspiration everywhere from desert sunsets to a beetle — yes you heard me, a beetle.desert mood board w beetle

As I surrounded myself with the sights and textures of the desert and began to pour, something happened. I found a deepened appreciation for deep blue, bronze and fiery orange. It was a fantastic reminder that our color preferences are not set in stone. Someone like me, who loves all things bold and bright, can still find beauty on the other side of the color spectrum. It was also affirmation that different colors produce different emotions.

Teal and pink speak my language. They are energetic, confident and fearless and a little bit loud. But these ten paintings reminded me that there is also a time for rest, solace and quiet. A time to be still, take deep breaths and watch the sun set.

This installation, along with some of my other work, will be on display at Press Cafe in Fort Worth on March 30 during the Fort Worth Art Dealers Association Gallery Night. This will be your only chance to see these paintings in Texas before they head to Arizona the next day. I would love to meet you and to show you these new paintings inspired by the wonders of the desert.

The installation will kick off with a Meet the Artist Event at The Gallery on April 5 from 4-5:30 p.m.
